My goal is to guide women to shift their priorities towards quality over quantity, feeling over doing, and self care over all else.
My Story
Welcome to Whole-listic Hormone Health! My name is Emily and I am a Holistic Nutritionist. Food and nutrition have long been passions of mine and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to share what I have learned with you.
In 2010 I left my hometown of Jacksonville, FL and moved across the globe to Kauai in pursuit of a simpler life. I had been working in sales and marketing for over 5 years and was starting to question the direction my life was going, as we often do at 27. In between jobs I decided to take a trip to visit some friends on Kauai. Little did I know that trip would change the course of my life. Upon returning home, I turned down a job in medical sales that I had been offered while I was away, sold most of my belongings, sublet my apartment and moved to Kauai five weeks later. And that is where my journey in holistic health really began.
Shortly after moving to Kauai I went to see a Naturopath for the first time. Prior to this visit I had never really questioned Western medicine. I did what the doctor said, and as a result began taking birth control, an anti-depressant, and thyroid medication. My naturopath discovered that I was deficient in a few vitamins and my liver enzymes were elevated so she recommended I do a cleanse and slowly started to wean me off the meds. She also explained to me how long-term birth control use could be contributing to my symptoms, something that had never been mentioned before. After six months my thyroid levels were normal, I was no longer vitamin deficient, my liver enzymes improved, and I was med free. That experience really made me want to dig deeper into nutrition and natural healing.
After years of reading health and wellness books/blogs, watching documentaries, and listening to podcasts, I started to think about how I could to turn my passions into a career. I had been working in restaurants and with private chefs, and although I loved food and cooking I knew this wasn’t the direction I wanted to go. I decided to dig a little deeper and signed up for a Yoga Teacher Training which consisted of three weeks of immersion into yoga philosophy and asana. I knew the experience would be life changing but I had no idea it would be preparing me for one of the biggest transformations of my life, motherhood. That’s right, in the last week of training I found out I was pregnant.
Becoming a mama has brought more joy and love to my life than I could have ever imagined. Although it is the most rewarding and important job I’ve ever had, it has not come without challenges. The round the clock breastfeeding and sleepless nights really took a toll on my health. I was exhausted, depleted, moody, and just generally feeling off. I turned to a friend and nutritional therapist who specializes in women’s health to help me sort things out. One of her first recommendations was to do a hormone test. Something I hadn’t thought of but made perfect sense.
Of course my hormones were off! I was determined to heal naturally and motivated to learn more about hormones and their effects on our overall health. So much so that I decided it was time to go back to school! That summer I enrolled in the Holistic Nutrition program at Bauman College.
Now I’m a certified Holistic Nutritionist with a passion for helping women reclaim their health. Hormones, which act like chemical messengers, play such an important role in a woman’s health and well-being and are often overlooked by mainstream medicine, where prescribing birth control and anti-depressants is the norm instead of getting to the root cause of ones health concerns. The food choices we make, our environment and how we choose to live, play such an important role in how our hormones communicate. We can’t afford to overlook these areas. My goal is to educate, guide, and inspire women to take their health into their own hands. Let’s work together to improve your life!
